In comparison to other regions, Latin America is lagging in the adoption of internet-based tools for data collection. Some of the reasons why Latin America has been slow to catch-up with online research include:
- Lower high-speed and wireless internet coverage, particularly outside major cities
- Higher costs to access internet that lead to a systematic exclusion of lower income households
- Insecurity leads respondents to ignore pure online invitations, sometimes it works better to combine face-to-face or telephone contacts with an online survey to generate more trust among respondents
- Lack of digital literacy, particularly among older adults
Although the trend is changing slowly, we suggest some caution to our clients before embarking on a online research project that involves Latin America.
